Who is Themis?

The project Who is Themis? started with a photo I took of a statue in Prague. The statue is from Themis, a Greek godess of justice.

In my project, I wanted to give women the space to tell their stories of injustice. Especially the stories that you’ve learned to deal with and accept, but if you were to tell them to other people they would probably be amazed that you’ve
just accepted it. I asked the women to record their stories and to pose as the goddess Themis.

In Who is Themis? I asked myself who this woman in the statue actually was. I came to the conclusion that she is a strong woman who knows good from bad and stands up for it. She knows where she stands in the world and is not afraid to stand up for herself and for what she believes. I also concluded that Themis is in everyone, that everyone has the capacity to feel like this. What I hoped to do with this project is to give women the space to tell their stories, and I hope this project is a start for conversations about this topic.
